Sugars, Sodas..so Not Good 4 U! .. & GMO info

So, again, my man asks me, "What's wrong with soda??" and I have to look it up coz he won't believe just me..
First stop is this blog: SODA and it tells of Sugar and Phosphoric Acid being the worst [let's not forget Aspertame..] But I'm trying to find info on that Wood Rosen that I see in Orange Crush..

Found a page listing some drinks, in 1997, that had too much Benzene in drinks? Benzene is also linked to cancer, cirrhosis and Parkinson's It also cuases Leukemia and can cross the placenta affecting the fetus.. YUM?

I nice piece fromwikipedia about the history of Soda.. in the 1950's people used to drink phosphate soda's.
A drink with 1 oz orange syrup, 1/2 teaspoon of phosphoric acid, and add in carbonated water
in a glass, filled with ice.
This site also states that the USDA recommends (RDA) less than 10 teaspoons/day of sugars for a 2,000-Calorie diet. Most soft drinks have MORE than that!

Make your own CLEANERS
funny that they list Coca-cola as an ingrediant!??

Funny Picture praise that Coke.

Orange, Pineapple, Cherry CRUSH site.
Ingredients: CARBONATED WATER, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, CITRIC ACID, SODIUM BENZOATE (PRESERVATIVE), ACACIA GUM, NATURAL FLAVORS, ESTER GUM, YELLOW 6, SALT, BROMINATED SOYBEAN OIL, RED 40.
I don't see Wood Rosin or Esters..but Ester Gum, that must be it??

Here is one site that tells about: Wood Rosin. It states that because orange and other citrus oils and water will not mix, we must add in that Ester Gum or Wood rosin and glycerol.. just like in mayonnaise, it would separate without..and there's a regulation of only 100 parts per million allowed.. hmm. It comes from the long-leaf pine tree.

The following information came from 'wisegeek', it's about making your own
CHEWING GUM.

Chewing gum is simple to make at home. All you need is a microwaveable bowl, citric acid, corn syrup, powdered sugar, flavoring, glycerin and gum base. Popular flavorings are peppermint oil, cinnamon and vanilla. Most of these are sold at a regular grocers, except glycerin and gum base, which you can find at a craft store.

Stir together 1/3 cup (78.86 ml) of gum base, 1/4 tsp. (1.23 ml) citric acid, 1 tsp. (4.92 ml) glycerin and 2 Tbsp. (29.57 ml) corn syrup in the microwaveable bowl. Place in the microwave for a minute. While it is microwaving, spread powdered sugar on a cutting bored, leaving an empty area in the center. Set aside some powdered sugar for dipping your finger.

Take out the gum base and stir in approximately 6 drops of flavoring. Empty the mixture from the bowl and drop it onto the cutting boared. Knead it in the powdered sugar for at least 20 minutes. If your hands or the mixture feels sticky, add more powdered sugar. The longer it is kneaded, the stronger the gum will be.

Flatten the mixture out with a rolling pin. Roll the flattened gum base into the shape of a rope. Cut it into standard chewing gum pieces with kitchen shears. Use wax paper, cellophane or a plastic bag to store the gum when it is finished.

BUT... Here's a recipe to make your own ROOTBEERExtract!!

Make Your Own Root Beer Extract
You may make your own root beer extract according to the following recipe from
Papazian, Charlie,  The Home Brewer’s Companion, Avon Books, 1994.  The
author warns that this mixture, when fermented, builds up pressure quickly and
may cause exploding bottles.  This mixture is best carbonated by artificial means.
This was not tested by the author due to difficulties in obtaining all ingredients.
Ingredients for 5 gallons (19 L):
3 quarts (2.9 L) brown molasses
2 oz. (57 g) sassafras bark  (US government regards sassafras as a
carcinogen.)
2 oz. (57 g) sarsaparilla (woody, shredded)
2 oz. (57 g) wintergreen (herb)
1/2 oz. (14.2 g) licorice bark of root (woody, shredded)
1 vanilla bean (chopped)
up to 1 lb. (0.45 kg) honey, corn or cane sugar to taste
Optional flavorings: teaberry,  dearberry, checkerberry, boxberry,
spiceberry, clove, cinnamon, star anise, ginger, ginseng, juniper berries,
and malt extract.
Bring two gallons of water to a boil.  Add the ingredients, without any honey or
sugar, stir, and immediately turn off the heat.  Cover and allow to steep for 2 to 4
hours.  Strain the mixture and add cold water to a total volume of 5 gallons.  Add
honey and sugar to taste.  Chill.  Force carbonate with carbon dioxide in a soda
siphon bottle or carbonate with pieces of dry ice.  If stored for a long time, check
the pressure to avoid possible explosions

  1. The first marketed chewing gum, called The State of Maine Pure Spruce Gum, was made and sold by John B. Curtis, in 1848. Chewing um was first patented in 1869 by William Semple

  2. You might think that sarsaparilla would be made from extract of the sarsaparilla plant, a tropical vine distantly related to the lily, but you'd be wrong. It was originally made (artificial flavors have taken over now, of course) from a blend of birch oil and sassafras, the dried root bark of the sassafras tree. Sassafras was widely used as a home remedy in the nineteenth century--taken in sufficient doses, it induces sweating, which some people thought was a good thing. Sarsaparilla apparently made its debut as a patent medicine, an easy-to-take form of sassafras, much as Coca-Co
